OUR STORY
Self care is not selfish
Sauna at the Cottage is a women‑owned backyard wellness space in Snohomish. Our mission is simple: help people relax, unwind, and let the mind wander.
We wanted a place where you can fully be yourself — where nobody is thinking about what anyone looks like in a swimsuit, where you can sit in the heat and the quiet and reconnect with your mind and your body, and where, if you want it, you'll find real connection with the people sharing the bench beside you.
1 in 4 women in the United States experience severe intimate‑partner violence in their lifetime. That should not be the case.
Your home needs to be a safe space. Having rest and peace is your right.
A portion of every booking supports Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County
BENEFITS OF SAUNA AND COLD PLUNGE
what the research says about contrast therapy
Sauna bathing and cold‑water immersion have been studied for decades — much of it in Finland, where the sauna is a way of life. Here’s what the peer‑reviewed evidence shows, body part by body part.
40%
lower all‑cause mortality among people using a sauna 4–7×/week vs once a week
66%

Heart & Circulation
Brain & Mood
Immune Health
Sleep & Stress
Regular sauna bathing is associated with about 46% lower risk of developing high blood pressure.
Zaccardi F, et al. Am J Hypertens 2017
SAUNA BENEFITS
Frequent sauna use is associated with markedly lower cardiovascular and all‑cause mortality — 4–7 sessions a week vs one was linked to 63% lower sudden cardiac death and 40% lower all‑cause mortality over ~21 years.
Laukkanen T, et al. JAMA Intern Med 2015
COLD PLUNGE BENEFITS
Cold immersion sharply raises metabolic rate (about +350% at 14 °C) and stimulates the cardiovascular system.
Šrámek P, et al. Eur J Appl Physiol 2000
A single whole‑body heat session produced a sustained drop in depression scores in a small randomized trial — still measurable six weeks later.
Janssen CW, et al. JAMA Psychiatry 2016
SAUNA BENEFITS
Frequent sauna use is associated with roughly 61% lower stroke risk in a 15‑year follow‑up of men and women.
Laukkanen T, et al. Age Ageing 2017
COLD PLUNGE BENEFITS
A brief cold plunge (5 minutes at ~20 °C) boosted positive mood and reduced nervousness and distress in a controlled study.
Yankouskaya A, et al. Biology 2023
Regular sauna use roughly halved common‑cold episodes in a small six‑month trial.

SAUNA BENEFITS
Frequent sauna use is associated with fewer respiratory illnesses, including about 37% lower pneumonia risk.
COLD PLUNGE BENEFITS
Daily cold water exposure was associated with 29% fewer sick days from work in a 3,018‑person randomized trial.
SAUNA BENEFITS
83.5% of regular sauna users report improved sleep; 5–15 sessions a month were linked to higher mental well‑being.
Hussain JN, et al. Complement Ther Med 2019
COLD PLUNGE BENEFITS
A short cold plunge reduced nervousness and distress in a study with 39 respondents and increased the feelings of being proud and inspired.
Yankouskaya A, et al. Biology 2023
A 30‑minute sauna lowers blood pressure into the recovery window and helps with arterial stiffness

A note on safety
- Drink water before and after. Keep sauna rounds to 10–20 minutes and cool down gradually.
- Skip the sauna and plunge after alcohol or drugs.
- Talk to your doctor first if you’re pregnant, have a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, an arrhythmia, a recent heart attack or stroke, Raynaud’s, or take blood‑pressure medication.
- Cold water can trigger a gasp reflex — enter slowly, never plunge alone, keep first dips short (30–60 seconds), and keep your head above water.
- Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or tight in the chest.
- Sauna and cold therapy are wellness practices, not treatments for any disease. The Finnish studies are observational — they show associations, not proof of cause.
